Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: a rooibos extract in 4:1 concentrate form, meaning the extract is made by concentrating the herb to four times its original strength. Rooibos (also called red bush tea) is a caffeine-free plant native to South Africa, traditionally brewed as a beverage.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Rooibos product and its label doesn't state a use — see Rooibos's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for rooibos is sparse. We don't have reliable data to rate whether it helps with age-related cognitive decline, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), anxiety, cancer, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes.

While rooibos has a long history as a tea, the science behind this extract for those specific uses isn't established enough for us to make a claim.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Rooibos tea in normal beverage amounts is generally well tolerated. However, this is a concentrated extract — not a light cup of tea — and concentrated extracts haven't been studied much.

One case report noted that a man drinking 10 cups of rooibos tea daily for over a year developed liver problems and low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Because extracts are more potent and less research exists on them, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product regularly.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Rooibos.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 880 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, have your doctor or pharmacist check whether you're on any medications broken down by your liver's CYP enzymes, particularly atorvastatin (Lipitor) or ACE inhibitors for blood pressure. Rooibos extract may increase how long these drugs stay in your system, raising the risk of side effects.

If you take any blood pressure medications, cholesterol drugs, heart medications, or blood thinners, verify it's safe first.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Rooibos extract may be worth considering if you're interested in its traditional uses and your medications don't interact with it. But this concentrated form carries real interaction risk with common medications — especially blood pressure drugs, heart medications, and cholesterol medications like atorvastatin.

Check your prescriptions before starting, and have that conversation with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're on any regular medication.

Red Tea Rooibos 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Red Tea Rooibos 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Red Tea Rooibos 4:1 Extract Powder has a known interaction with 879 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Red Tea Rooibos 4:1 Extract Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will rooibos extract make my medications stronger?
Possibly, yes — rooibos can slow how your liver breaks down several types of medications, which may raise their levels in your blood. This is especially true for cholesterol drugs like atorvastatin and blood pressure medications. That's why checking with your doctor or pharmacist first is important.
Is this the same as drinking rooibos tea?
No — this is a 4:1 concentrated extract, which is much stronger than a cup of tea. Concentrated extracts haven't been studied as much, and the risks are higher. Even though rooibos tea is generally safe as a beverage, an extract is a different ball game.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have enough data to know either way. Because this is a concentrated extract and pregnancy and breastfeeding are times when you want to be extra careful, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
What is rooibos, anyway?
Rooibos is a caffeine-free plant from South Africa, traditionally steeped as a tea. This product uses an extract — a concentrated form — rather than the leaf itself.
Can too much rooibos hurt my liver?
Large, long-term amounts may cause liver problems in some people. One case reported a man who drank 10 cups of rooibos tea daily for over a year and developed hepatic dysfunction. Since this is a concentrated extract, not a light tea, it's wise to use it only as directed and talk with your provider if you plan regular use.
