How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly cooked elderberry products, like this syrup, are generally well tolerated. The concern with raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, or bark is that they contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, numbness, and confusion — but cooking eliminates this toxin, so your prepared product should be safe on that front.
There is one case report of autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation) in someone who took elderberry for years, though this is rare. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so it's best to avoid elderberry supplements.
The same goes for breastfeeding — we just don't have the data to say it's safe.
