Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something worth knowing if you take Cyltezo (adalimumab-adbm). This medication works by calming down your immune system, specifically by blocking a signal called tumor necrosis factor (TNF). It's prescribed for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease, where an overactive immune system is causing trouble. Elderberry, on the other hand, may gently stimulate the immune system, including nudging up TNF and other inflammatory signals. So the two could work against each other, in theory.

If elderberry revs up what Cyltezo is trying to quiet down, your medication might not control your symptoms as well, meaning a possible flare. I'll be honest, though: this concern is mostly theoretical and comes from lab work, not strong human studies. Occasional culinary elderberry is unlikely to matter much, but daily concentrated supplements are worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Adalimumab-Adbm page

“Adalimumab-adbm (Cyltezo) calms an overactive immune system to control conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease, and nearly every supplement on this list, echinacea and ashwagandha among the most familiar, could theoretically pull in the opposite direction by revving up immunity. About Elderberry

What is Elderberry?

Elderberry
  • Colds
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Other respiratory infections
  • Immune support
  • Sinus and upper respiratory symptoms

Elderberry is a popular herbal supplement, mainly taken to help with colds and flu. Some small studies suggest it may modestly shorten cold or flu symptoms, but the evidence is limited and not conclusive. Cooked berries and properly prepared products are generally well tolerated, but raw or unripe parts can cause nausea and should be avoided.
