Here's the idea behind this one. Elderberry can nudge your immune system to be more active, bumping up signals like interleukins and tumor necrosis factor. Fluorouracil (often called 5-FU) is a chemotherapy drug that works in part by quieting down fast-growing cells, including parts of the immune system. So in theory, an immune-revving supplement could work against what your treatment is trying to do. I'll be honest with you: this is mostly a theoretical concern, and there isn't strong human data showing it actually changes how 5-FU works.

Because chemo is serious business, I wouldn't add elderberry during your treatment without clearing it first. Please check with your oncology team or pharmacist, since they're guiding your full plan.
