Here's the thinking behind this one. Fingolimod works by quieting down immune cells that attack the nerves in MS, which is exactly what you want to slow the disease. Elderberry, on the other hand, has been shown in lab and small studies to nudge the immune system in the opposite direction by boosting certain immune messengers like interleukins and tumor necrosis factor. So in theory, elderberry could push against what fingolimod is trying to do and make it work a little less effectively.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and the evidence is on the weaker side, so it's not a reason to panic. Still, fingolimod is a serious MS medication, so before adding an elderberry supplement, run it by your neurologist or pharmacist first.

Elderberry is a popular herbal supplement, mainly taken to help with colds and flu. What Is Fingolimod Used For?

Brand names: Gilenya, Tascenso ODT

Fingolimod — available as capsules (Fingolimod, Fingolimod Hydrochloride, and Gilenya) and as an orally disintegrating tablet (Tascenso ODT) — is approved for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients 10 years of age and older. This includes clinically isolated syndrome (a first MS episode), relapsing-remitting MS (the most common type with flare-ups and periods of stability), and active secondary progressive MS (a later stage where disability gradually worsens but relapses still occur).

All supported formulations share these same approved uses. The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency of relapses and slow disease activity.
