Here's the thing to keep in mind: deflazacort is a steroid that works partly by calming down an overactive immune system. Elderberry seems to do the opposite. In lab and small studies, it can nudge the immune system up, boosting signals like interleukins and tumor necrosis factor. So in theory, they're working against each other, and elderberry could blunt some of what deflazacort is trying to accomplish.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. This concern is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, not strong human data. Still, since deflazacort matters a lot for managing Duchenne muscular dystrophy, I wouldn't add a regular elderberry supplement without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist. An occasional culinary serving is far less of a worry than daily concentrated capsules or syrups.

Elderberry is a popular herbal supplement, mainly taken to help with colds and flu. What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
