What’s inside
Full disclosure
Sassafras Alcohol Free contains one active ingredient: sassafras leaf extract. The product is delivered in a liquid form with glycerin and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We have no effectiveness data on file for sassafras leaf extract, so we can't speak to what this product is intended to do or whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sassafras contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned from food because it's linked to cancer and liver damage. The safety notes in our data are clear: this ingredient is regarded as unsafe for medicinal use, and the risks of toxicity likely outweigh any benefits.
Oral use can cause sweating, hot flashes, and in large amounts — hallucinations, tremors, vomiting, dangerous changes in heart rate and blood pressure, and liver cancer. Topically, it can cause a rash.
Because of safrole's toxicity and known harm to a developing baby, the safety data advises against use during pregnancy. The same applies to breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety information, and safrole's toxicity is a concern.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take sedatives, sleep aids, or anxiety medications (CNS depressants), or if you take omeprazole (Prilosec) or other drugs that speed up your liver's CYP1A2 enzyme, check with your pharmacist before using this product. The interactions are Moderate in severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product carries serious safety concerns tied to its active compound, safrole, which the FDA has banned from food. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking sedatives or acid-reflux medications, do not use this product without talking to your pharmacist or doctor first.
Given the toxicity profile, it's worth a careful conversation with your healthcare provider before starting it at all.

Sassafras Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sassafras Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient — sassafras leaf extract — that carries documented interactions with medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that calm the brain and nervous system — sedatives, sleep aids, some pain relievers, anxiety medications). Sassafras may add to their sedative effect, making you drowsy, impaired, or unsteady.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Additionally, there's a Moderate interaction with CYP1A2 inducers — a specific group of drugs that speed up how your liver works. Lab research suggests these inducers might increase the toxicity of safrole, the active compound in sassafras, though this hasn't been reported in humans yet.
One common example is omeprazole (Prilosec), used for acid reflux.
Altogether, these interactions span 273 individual medications. Before you add this product, check your exact prescriptions with the tool on this page.
