Here's the simple version: amitriptyline already tends to make people drowsy. It's a tricyclic antidepressant, and sedation, that heavy, sleepy feeling, is one of its most common effects. Sassafras has mild calming properties too, so the worry on file is that pairing them could pile up and leave you more groggy, dizzy, or foggy than expected.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern, based on how the two behave rather than real-world reports, so it's labeled possible rather than proven. That said, I'd steer clear of sassafras anyway, since it contains safrole, which the FDA banned in foods over liver and cancer risks. If you take amitriptyline and want something sassafras-flavored, talk with your pharmacist and stick to safrole-free products.
