Here's the gist for Loxapine (Loxitane or the inhaled Adasuve): this is a sedating antipsychotic, so it already tends to make people feel drowsy, foggy, or slowed down. Sassafras is thought to have its own mild calming effect, so layering the two together could, in theory, deepen that sleepiness. You might notice more grogginess, dizziness, trouble concentrating, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's a theoretical concern based on how each acts, not something proven in real patients. The bigger reason I'd steer clear of sassafras altogether is that it contains safrole, a compound linked to liver harm and cancer. If you're on Loxapine, please run any sassafras product past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Loxapine Used For?

Brand names: Loxitane, Adasuve

Loxapine capsules are used for the ongoing treatment of schizophrenia in adults. Adasuve (loxapine inhalation powder) is used in a different, more specific situation: to quickly calm sudden, severe agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder. Because of serious safety requirements, Adasuve must be given by a healthcare professional in a certified medical setting — it is not a take-home medication.
