Here's the simple version: Clobazam is a benzodiazepine that calms electrical activity in the brain, and one of its built-in effects is making you drowsy. Sassafras may have mild sedative properties of its own, so taking the two together could, in theory, add up to more sleepiness than you'd expect from your seizure medicine alone. Think of extra grogginess, trouble concentrating, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how each is thought to work, not on real patient reports. That said, I'd steer clear of sassafras anyway because it contains safrole, which the FDA banned in foods over liver and cancer worries. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What is Sassafras?

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Clobazam Used For?

Clobazam is used as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment for seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. It is approved for patients 2 years of age and older.

This indication applies to all available forms: Sympazan (dissolving oral film), Onfi (tablets and oral suspension), and generic clobazam tablets and oral suspension.
