Here's the concern with pairing sassafras and morphine: both can have a calming, sedating effect on the brain. Morphine already slows down your nervous system, which is how it eases pain but also why it can make you drowsy, foggy, or short of breath. Sassafras may add a little to that sleepy effect, so the worry is they stack on top of each other.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is a theoretical interaction based on how these substances behave, not on strong human studies. The bigger issue is that internal sassafras itself isn't considered safe because of its safrole content. With a strong opioid like morphine, please don't combine the two without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Morphine Used For?

Morphine is used to manage acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) pain that is severe enough to need an opioid and that hasn't been adequately treated by other options. The higher-concentration liquid form is reserved for adults who are already opioid-tolerant — meaning their body is used to opioid medications.

Because of real risks of addiction, misuse, and overdose, morphine is only prescribed when other pain treatments have not worked or are not expected to work. It is not intended for long-term use unless the pain continues to be severe and no alternatives are suitable.
