Here's the simple version: Zaleplon (Sonata) already works by quieting down activity in your brain so you can fall asleep. Sassafras can have a mild sedating effect of its own, so taking both together could, in theory, stack those calming effects on top of each other. That might leave you feeling extra drowsy, groggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, especially if you get up during the night.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's based on how these things work on paper, not on real patient reports, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. That said, I'd skip sassafras anyway, since it contains safrole and isn't considered safe to swallow. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What is Sassafras?

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Zaleplon Used For?

Brand names: Sonata, Starnoc

Zaleplon capsules are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Specifically, they help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep (sleep onset). Clinical studies showed this benefit for up to 30 days of use.

Zaleplon has not been shown to increase total sleep time or reduce the number of times you wake up during the night. It is intended for short-term use, and if sleep problems continue beyond 7–10 days, a doctor should evaluate you for an underlying cause.
