Here's the gist with Valium (diazepam) and sassafras: this is a theoretical concern, meaning it's based on how each one behaves, not on real-world reports. Sassafras can have a mild calming, sedating quality of its own. Stack that on top of a benzodiazepine like diazepam, which already slows down brain activity, and the two could add up. The worry is extra drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or feeling more sluggish than usual.

To be honest, the bigger issue with sassafras is its safrole content, which the FDA banned in foods because it may harm the liver and cause cancer, so I'd steer clear of internal use regardless. If you've been using it, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before making any changes to your routine.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
