Here's the simple version: desipramine can already make some folks feel drowsy, foggy, or low on energy. The concern with sassafras is that it may have its own mild sedating effect, so pairing the two could in theory add up to more sleepiness, dizziness, or trouble concentrating than you'd get from your antidepressant alone.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's a theoretical interaction based on how these substances behave, not something proven in real patients. The bigger issue is sassafras itself, since its safrole content has been linked to liver damage and cancer in lab studies, which is why the FDA banned it in foods. I'd skip internal use of sassafras entirely and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything new with desipramine.

What is Sassafras?

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
