CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Hydrocodone Bitartrate
Hydrocodone Bitartrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Sassafras interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Hydrocodone is a strong opioid pain reliever, and one of its main effects is slowing down your brain and body. That can mean drowsiness, foggy thinking, slowed breathing, and feeling out of it. Sassafras has been linked to mild sedative-type effects, so the concern is that putting the two together could pile on, leaving you sleepier or more sedated than expected.
I want to be honest about how solid this is. This warning is theoretical, based on how the two might act, not on real reports of people running into trouble. Given that sassafras carries its own safety concerns (it contains safrole, which experts say to avoid), I'd skip it anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Sassafras
What is Sassafras?
- Digestive complaints
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Joint and muscle aches
- Skin conditions (topical folk use)
- As a flavoring agent (traditional root beer)
Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.
About Hydrocodone

These products are not intended for use on an as-needed basis. They are reserved for patients whose pain cannot be managed with non-opioid medicines or shorter-acting opioid products.
