Here's the gist for oxymorphone (Opana): this is a strong opioid pain reliever, and one of its main effects is slowing things down. It can make you drowsy, foggy, lightheaded, and in higher amounts it can slow your breathing. Sassafras may have mild sedating qualities of its own, so the concern is that pairing the two could add up to more sleepiness or sedation than you'd expect from the medicine alone.

I'll be honest with you, this one is theoretical. It's based on how the ingredients behave, not on real-world reports, so it isn't a strong, proven interaction. The bigger issue is that sassafras contains safrole, which the FDA banned in food because of liver and cancer concerns, so I'd avoid swallowing it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Oxymorphone Used For?

Brand names: Numorphan, Opana, Opana ER, Opana Injection

Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Tablets (immediate-release) are used to treat acute pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain treatments are not enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are used to manage severe, persistent pain that needs to be treated with a daily opioid over an extended period and when other options are inadequate.

Both forms are reserved for situations where non-opioid medicines or other approaches have not worked well enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are not meant to be taken on an as-needed basis — they are for ongoing, around-the-clock pain management only.
