Here's the simple version: Clorazepate is a benzodiazepine that calms the brain, which is why it can leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or relaxed. Sassafras has been reported to have its own mild sedating, calming effect. Put the two together and those drowsy feelings could stack on top of each other, so you might feel sleepier, less alert, or a little unsteady on your feet than you'd expect from the Clorazepate alone.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how sassafras is thought to act rather than real patient reports. The bigger issue is that sassafras contains safrole, which the FDA banned in foods because it can harm the liver and may cause cancer. I'd skip internal sassafras for that reason alone, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing it with Clorazepate.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Clorazepate Used For?

Brand names: Tranxene, Tranxene T-Tab, Tranxene SD

Clorazepate dipotassium tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. They are also used as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy alongside other medications to help control partial seizures in adults and children aged 9 and older.

In addition, clorazepate dipotassium tablets are used for symptomatic relief during acute alcohol withdrawal — helping to ease the physical symptoms that can occur when someone suddenly stops drinking.
