Sassafras Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Sassafras against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Sassafras by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient: a certified organic liquid extract made from the dried leaf of Sassafras albidum. The extract is suspended in menstruum (a liquid extraction medium used to concentrate the plant's compounds).
This is a single-ingredient product with no added binders or fillers beyond the extraction medium itself.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We hold no effectiveness ratings in our data for sassafras. The evidence of benefit for this product is not established in the information available to us.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sassafras carries serious safety concerns that override any potential benefit. The plant contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned from food because it is linked to cancer and liver damage.
Sassafras is generally regarded as unsafe for medicinal use; the risks of toxicity are real and substantial. Orally, sassafras can cause sweating, hot flashes, hallucinations lasting several days, tremors, vomiting, dilated pupils, high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, weakness, and—in severe cases—liver cancer and death.
Large amounts of sassafras oil (5 mL or more in adults) carry particular risk. Topically, it can cause contact dermatitis.
Because safrole is toxic to a developing baby and safety in breastfeeding is not established, the safety data advises against sassafras during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Sassafras, double-check any central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants)—benzodiazepines, opioids, sleep aids, or other sedating drugs—because this product may add to their drowsiness and impairment. Also clear any cytochrome P450 1A2 inducers (CYP1A2 inducers) such as omeprazole (Prilosec) with your doctor or pharmacist, as these may theoretically increase sassafras toxicity, though human evidence is lacking.
Use the medication checker on this page to review your full list.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sassafras is not recommended for use. The safrole it contains is a known carcinogen and hepatotoxin (liver poison) that the FDA removed from the food supply.
Unless your doctor or pharmacist has specifically advised you to use it and believes the benefit outweighs the documented risks of cancer, liver toxicity, and serious acute effects, this is not a product to take. If you've been considering it or have questions about your individual situation, talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist.

Sassafras by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sassafras by Herbal Terra interacts with two major drug categories, and both carry Moderate severity concerns.
Through its sassafras content, this product may add to the sedating effects of central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants)—drugs like benzodiazepines, opioids, and sleep aids—potentially making you drowsier or impairing your coordination more than either substance alone would.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second concern involves cytochrome P450 1A2 inducers (CYP1A2 inducers), a group of medications that may theoretically increase how your body processes safrole, sassafras's active compound, and raise its potential for toxicity. Omeprazole (Prilosec), a common heartburn medication, is one example.
So far, this interaction hasn't been reported in people, and it's not yet known whether these inducers actually increase sassafras toxicity in humans—but it's a signal worth taking seriously.
Altogether, these interactions span 275 individual medications. Before you take this product, check your exact medications using the tool on this page, and discuss the results with your doctor or pharmacist.
