Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Skullcap's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: relieve nervousness and support calmness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, nervous tension, muscle tension.
  • The closest evidence on file: Skullcap is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Skullcap is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Insomnia, Stress.

The evidence on skullcap is not established. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research isn't there yet to confirm it does.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Safety data on skullcap is limited. The most common side effects reported with oral use are sedation, cognitive impairment (mind fog or slower thinking), and digestive upset.

In one small study, around 9% of people taking a higher daily dose reported mild digestive disturbances; another person on that same dose reported vivid dreams over 2 weeks, though it's unclear if skullcap caused it. A single 100 mg dose did not show CNS side effects in testing, but a 200 mg dose might cause sedation and cognitive problems.

Skullcap is not recommended during pregnancy—there isn't enough safety data. Similarly, avoid it while breastfeeding because safety is unknown.

Because product quality varies and long-term safety is unclear, use it with care and only short-term.

Before you take Scullcap by Pure Herbs, double-check any CNS depressants you're on—that includes sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medications, sedating antidepressants, opioid painkillers, antihistamines with sedating effects, and alcohol. The combination can intensify drowsiness and mental fog.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're interested in skullcap for stress, anxiety, or sleep, keep in mind the evidence doesn't yet support its use. If you take any sedating medication or drink alcohol, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this—the additive drowsiness and cognitive effects could be a real concern.

Scullcap by Pure Herbs: Common Questions

Does Scullcap by Pure Herbs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Scullcap has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Scullcap contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What does skullcap actually do?
Skullcap has been used traditionally for stress, anxiety, and sleep, but our data shows there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to confirm it works for those or other conditions like epilepsy or PMDD. The research just isn't there to back it up.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No—there isn't enough safety data during pregnancy, so it's best avoided. It's also unknown while breastfeeding, so avoid it then too. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to be, or nursing and want to discuss options.
What are the side effects?
The most common ones are sedation, drowsiness, mind fog (cognitive impairment), and digestive upset. In one study, about 9% of people at a higher daily dose reported mild digestive disturbances. A single low dose (100 mg) didn't show these effects, but higher doses (200 mg or more) are more likely to cause them.
How much skullcap is safe to take?
Our data shows a single 100 mg dose didn't cause cognitive side effects, but 200 mg and higher doses might cause sedation and mind fog. Long-term safety isn't well studied, so it's meant for short-term use only. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you figure out the right dose for you.
Does the quality of this product matter?
Yes—skullcap products vary in quality, which is one reason to use it with care. If you decide to try it, pick a reputable brand and talk with your pharmacist about what to look for.
