What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: skullcap herb extract from Scutellaria lateriflora, supplied at 1600 mg per dose in a liquid form. The extract is suspended in purified water, vegetable glycerin, and a small amount of certified organic alcohol (12–15%).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for skullcap is insufficient to establish whether it works for epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) — at least, that's what the research we hold shows. More and better studies would be needed to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is often used short-term, but the evidence on its safety is limited and product quality varies, so use it with care. The most commonly reported side effects from oral use are sedation, cognitive impairment (trouble thinking clearly), and digestive disturbances — with mild digestive upset reported in a small fraction of people taking 350 mg three times daily.
A 100 mg dose didn't show cognitive effects in a single study, but higher doses of 200 mg or more may cause sedation and mental dulling. There isn't enough safety data to use skullcap during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so those uses are best avoided.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before combining skullcap with central nervous system (CNS) depressants — sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, some pain relievers, and muscle relaxants — because the product can add to their sedating and mind-dulling effects. Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any of these.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Skullcap is used traditionally for stress and nerve-related conditions, but we don't have strong evidence it actually works for these or most other uses. The bigger concern is that it can make you drowsy and cognitively impaired, especially at higher doses, and it can amplify that effect if you're also taking sedating medications.
If you take anything that slows your central nervous system — pain relievers, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or muscle relaxants — check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
