What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is a single-ingredient liquid: skullcap flowering aerial parts extract made from fresh, undried plant material. The inactive ingredients are glycerin and distilled water, which help preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for skullcap doesn't support its use for any of the conditions listed — epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder all have insufficient reliable evidence behind them. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research to prove it hasn't been done or isn't strong enough yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is usually used only short-term, but the safety data is limited and product quality can vary, so use it carefully. The most common side effects reported are cognitive impairment, digestive disturbances, and sedation.
A small number of trial participants taking higher doses (200 mg or more) experienced sedation and trouble thinking; one person taking a much larger dose reported vivid dreams. Mild digestive upset occurred in around 9% of participants in one trial.
The safety data advises against using skullcap during pregnancy. Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it then as well.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Skullcap Alcohol-Free, double-check all CNS depressants with your doctor or pharmacist — that includes sleeping pills, sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, some pain relievers, and antihistamines used for sleep or allergies. Skullcap can make these drugs work more strongly, leaving you more sedated or cognitively impaired than expected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Skullcap may appeal to you if you're looking for a traditional herbal option for stress or sleep, but the evidence doesn't yet show it works for any condition listed here. The main risk is adding to the effects of sedative medications and making you drowsy or foggy.
Before you take it, especially if you're on any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, run them through our search tool and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's safe for your situation.

Skullcap Alcohol-Free by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Skullcap Alcohol-Free by Herb Pharm contains one active ingredient — skullcap — that does interact with medications.
The main concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow your central nervous system, like sedatives, sleeping pills, and some anxiety or pain medications). Skullcap can add to their effects, potentially increasing drowsiness and cognitive impairment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the interaction is rated Moderate rather than Major, the combination means you could feel more sedated or have more trouble thinking clearly than either drug alone would cause. Animal and clinical research shows skullcap itself can cause sedation and impair how well you think — so stacking it with another CNS depressant raises that risk.
Although, we could not check every medication you might take, the interactions we do have data for span 248 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to look up your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before you start.
