Skullcap is often used short-term, but the safety data is limited and product quality can vary, so it's worth using it carefully and under guidance. The most common side effects reported are cognitive impairment (trouble thinking clearly), digestive disturbances, and sedation.
A small number of trial participants taking higher doses (200 mg or more) experienced sedation and cognitive impairment; one person reported vivid dreams, though it's unclear if skullcap was the cause. Mild digestive trouble occurred in around 9% of people taking 350 mg three times daily for 2 weeks.
The safety data advises against skullcap during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
