Lavender is possibly effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea), though it's rated possibly ineffective for cancer-related pain. Clove's evidence for ventilator-associated pneumonia is rated possibly effective, but we hold insufficient evidence to rate it for cough, acute pain, or indigestion.
For anise and eucalyptus, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate their use for migraine, lice, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, acne, bronchitis, asthma, burns, or cancer. Bottom line: camphor has the clearest evidence base here; the others lack strong clinical support for most throat and cough uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these ingredients are generally well tolerated in food amounts and short-term use. Clove is safe as a spice but concentrated clove oil can be irritating or toxic in large amounts; orally, clove oil doses of only 5–10 mL can be toxic in children.
Lavender seems well tolerated orally and topically in standard amounts, though the essential oil is toxic if swallowed; rarely, it may cause headache, nausea, or other gastrointestinal upset. Anise is generally safe as a food or tea, though the essential oil needs caution.
Eucalyptus oil can be toxic if swallowed undiluted — even 1 mL of undiluted oil can cause serious toxicity including seizures, coma, and death — and should never be taken by mouth. Camphor is unsafe if swallowed and can cause toxicity within minutes of ingestion; topical use is generally tolerated if kept to small, diluted amounts.
Because this product is a liquid containing multiple essential oils, clarify the concentration and intended use with your pharmacist before giving it to children or taking more than the label directs.

The most serious concern is clove bud oil, which theoretically increases the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with antidiabetes drugs — a Moderate-severity interaction. Clove's main active compound, eugenol, may also slow how your body breaks down several types of prescription medications, including those processed by your liver's cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9), which could raise their levels in your bloodstream.

Anise oil carries Moderate-severity interactions with estrogen-based hormone therapy and birth control pills, since lab research suggests it may have estrogenic or antiestrogenic effects — though this hasn't been confirmed in people. It also theoretically raises the risk of low blood sugar with antidiabetes drugs, and animal studies hint at possible effects on fluoxetine (Prozac), caffeine, codeine, diazepam (Valium), and imipramine (Tofranil), though human evidence is lacking.
Eucalyptus oil may inhibit several cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP3A4) and theoretically increases hypoglycemia risk with antidiabetes drugs; it may also reduce effectiveness of amphetamines and pentobarbital (Nembutal). Camphor shows a Moderate interaction with other liver-damaging drugs.

Clove bud Oil
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP1A2 in a dose-dependent manner,. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, inhibits CYP2C9 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP2D6 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, clove oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that eugenol, a constituent of clove, has antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Others)
Theoretically, topical application of clove oil with ibuprofen might increase the absorption and side effects of topical ibuprofen.
Laboratory research shows that topical application of clove oil increases the absorption of topical ibuprofen. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Eucalyptus Oil
Amphetamines
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the effectiveness of amphetamines.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the levels of amphetamines in the blood.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, eucalyptus leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that eucalyptus leaf might have hypoglycemic activity, and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP1A2, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C19, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C9, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol might reduce the effectiveness of pentobarbital.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol reduces the level of pentobarbital that reaches the brain.
Camphor
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of camphor with other hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.
Lavender Oil
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
Anise Oil
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, anise seed might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
A small clinical study shows that anise seed powder decreases fasting blood glucose levels by 36% when compared to baseline.
Caffeine
Theoretically, anise oil might decrease the efficacy of caffeine.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with caffeine decreases the bioavailability of caffeine. Whether this interaction will occur in humans is unclear.
Codeine
Theoretically, anise oil might increase the effects and adverse effects of codeine.
Animal research shows that anise oil increases the analgesic effects of codeine, possibly by inducing its phase I metabolism and increasing conversion to morphine. Whether this interaction occurs in humans is unclear.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, anise might interfere with contraceptive drug therapy.
Some in vitro research suggests that anise has estrogenic effects, while other in vitro research suggests that anise has antiestrogenic effects.
Diazepam (Valium)
Theoretically, anise oil might increase the effects and adverse effects of diazepam.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with diazepam increases the motor impairment associated with diazepam, possibly by inhibiting its breakdown by cytochrome P450 3A4. Whether this interaction occurs in humans is unclear.
Estrogens
Theoretically, anise might interfere with estrogen-based hormone replacement therapy.
Some in vitro research suggests that anise has estrogenic effects, while other in vitro research suggests that anise has antiestrogenic effects.
Fluoxetine (Prozac)
Theoretically, anise oil might decrease the efficacy of fluoxetine.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with fluoxetine reduces the antidepressant effects of fluoxetine, possibly by promoting its breakdown by cytochrome P450 2D6. Whether this interaction occurs in humans is unclear.
Imipramine (Tofranil)
Theoretically, anise oil might decrease the efficacy of imipramine.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with imipramine reduces the antidepressant effects of imipramine, possibly by promoting its breakdown by cytochrome P450 2D6. Whether this interaction occurs in humans is unclear.
Midazolam (Versed)
Theoretically, anise oil might increase the effects and adverse effects of midazolam.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with midazolam increases the motor impairment associated with midazolam, possibly by inhibiting its breakdown by cytochrome P450 3A4. Whether this interaction occurs in humans is unclear.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, anise might interfere with tamoxifen therapy.
Some in vitro research suggests that anise has estrogenic effects, while other in vitro research suggests that anise has antiestrogenic effects.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Others)
Theoretically, anise oil might decrease the levels and clinical effects of acetaminophen.
Animal research shows that taking anise oil with acetaminophen decreases peak plasma levels of acetaminophen but does not reduce overall bioavailability. Whether this interaction will occur in humans is unclear.
