HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Spinach Flakes Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: spinach flakes glycerite liquid extract — basically concentrated spinach in a liquid form with a chocolate flavor added. The other ingredients are glycerin (a humectant that keeps the liquid from drying out) and chocolate flavoring.
That's it.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence isn't established in our data for any of spinach's purported uses — including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cognitive function, muscle strength, obesity, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate spinach for any of these conditions, so we can't tell you whether this product will help with them.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spinach as a food is well tolerated and safe for most people, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Serious side effects are rare.
The main concern is in infants under 4 months old, where spinach has been linked to a blood condition called methemoglobinemia — so don't give this to very young babies. Some people may have allergies to spinach, and inhalation of spinach powder (occupational exposure) has triggered asthma and lung inflammation in sensitive individuals.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against this product if you take warfarin or any blood thinner (anticoagulant) — spinach interferes with how they work and may require dose adjustment. Also double-check if you take any drug for diabetes or blood sugar control, since spinach may lower blood sugar on its own.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take warfarin or any diabetes medication, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using this product — the interactions are real and need managing. For everyone else, spinach is nutritious and generally well tolerated, but we don't have solid evidence it'll treat the conditions marketed for it.
Use the medication checker below if you're on any prescription drugs.

Spinach Flakes Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita's Spinach Flakes Chocolate Flavor contains one active ingredient — spinach flakes glycerite liquid extract — and it does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner (anticoagulant). Spinach is high in vitamin K, which directly opposes how warfarin works.
Research shows that eating spinach once won't throw off your warfarin dose, but consuming it daily for a week will require your doctor to adjust your warfarin levels. If you take warfarin, you need consistent intake — not sporadic use of this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spinach may also lower blood sugar (glucose) in addition to diabetes medications. The evidence suggests spinach itself can reduce your blood sugar after meals, so combining it with antidiabetes drugs raises the theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
If you take any diabetes medication, monitor your blood glucose closely and talk with your doctor before adding this product.
Altogether, these interactions span 87 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your specific drugs.

Spinach Flakes Glycerite Liquid Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
There are claims that spinach leaves have hypoglycemic effects. Evidence from clinical research suggests that consumption of a spinach-rich meal reduces post-meal blood glucose levels. Theoretically, spinach might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Spinach contains vitamin K, which can interfere with the activity of warfarin.
In human research, although eating spinach with one meal does not result in coagulation test results outside the therapeutic range, daily consumption for one week necessitates dose adjustment of warfarin. Individuals using anticoagulants should consume a consistent daily amount of spinach to maintain the effect of anticoagulant therapy.
