What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: sulforaphane, a compound derived from broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables. It's the compound many people associate with the potential health benefits of eating broccoli and related plants.
The other ingredients listed — rice flour and hypromellose — are inactive ingredients that make up the capsule structure and help the supplement hold together.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for sulforaphane is mixed and limited. It's rated possibly effective for prostate cancer based on available studies.
For Helicobacter pylori (a bacteria linked to stomach ulcers), it's rated possibly ineffective. For allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, and cancer in general, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
More research is needed in most areas.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sulforaphane from food is considered safe, but concentrated supplements like this one are less studied for long-term use, so caution is warranted if you're taking it regularly. In clinical trials, the most common side effects were bowel discomfort, heartburn, stomach upset, and vomiting.
A small number of trial participants also reported headache, insomnia, and irritability. In one study of young males with autism, patients taking sulforaphane gained an average of 4 pounds over 18 weeks compared to placebo.
There are also two reported cases of seizure in males with autism after starting sulforaphane; one patient experienced a seizure after 3 weeks of use. For pregnancy, concentrated sulforaphane supplements have not been proven safe, so the safety data advises against them — stick to dietary amounts from food instead.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough information on supplement-level doses, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether dietary amounts or a supplement is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check any CYP3A4 substrates (Moderate severity) — a broad group that includes statins, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, and others. Also double-check CYP1A2 substrates and CYP2E1 substrates, both Moderate severity.
Use the search tool on this page with your exact medication names.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sulforaphane is a broccoli compound with possibly effective evidence for prostate cancer, though evidence for other conditions is limited or absent. The main caution is its interaction with common medications that rely on liver enzymes to be cleared — 712 individual medications are affected at Moderate severity.
If you take any prescription drug, check it against our interaction tool first. Avoid concentrated supplements in pregnancy; discuss supplement use while breastfeeding with your pharmacist.

Sulforaphane 400 mcg by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Sulforaphane 400 mcg contains one active ingredient — sulforaphane — that interacts with several medication types by affecting how your liver breaks them down.
The most serious concern is CYP3A4 substrates (Moderate severity): sulforaphane may slow your liver's metabolism of these drugs, raising their levels and effects in your body. This includes a wide range of medications, from certain statins and blood pressure drugs to immunosuppressants and some cancer treatments.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Two other enzyme systems are also affected at Moderate severity. CYP1A2 substrates — which include some antidepressants, certain pain relievers, and theophylline (a breathing medication) — may see altered levels; the interaction is complex because sulforaphane both inhibits and may increase the expression of this enzyme.
CYP2E1 substrates, a smaller group, may also accumulate if sulforaphane slows their breakdown.
Altogether, these interactions span 712 individual medications. Because many common drugs rely on these liver enzymes, you'll want to check your exact medications with the tool below before starting this supplement.
If you take any prescription medication, a quick search is worth your time.

Sulforaphane
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP2E1 substrates.
In vitro evidence shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP2E1 enzymes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
