Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Super Probiotic contains 2 active ingredients. Lactase is an enzyme that helps break down lactose, the natural sugar in milk and dairy products.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live beneficial bacterium (a probiotic) that supports digestive health. The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients including maltodextrin, calcium sulfate, hypromellose, silica, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive health and healthy intestinal flora.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Colic, Constipation, Helicobacter pylori — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactase is rated "Effective" for Lactose intolerance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Helicobacter pylori, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactase is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Colic.

Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance — the difficulty digesting dairy because of low lactase enzyme. There's not enough reliable evidence yet to rate it for colic or prematurity.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It appears possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and evidence isn't yet established for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 2 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Both ingredients are generally well tolerated when used as directed. Lactase is rated likely safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

There is no pregnancy or breastfeeding safety rating on file for Lactobacillus acidophilus; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing. A rare allergic reaction to lactase (contact dermatitis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis) has been reported in workers exposed to powdered lactase.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live organism, so there's a theoretical risk of infection in patients with compromised immunity, though this is uncommon. Minor gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea can occur when taking L. acidophilus, but these are uncommon.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 2 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

The main thing to watch for is antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity). Antibiotics can kill the live organisms in Lactobacillus acidophilus, making the probiotic less effective.

Space your doses apart if you can, and your pharmacist can help you schedule them. Check the medication search tool below with your exact prescriptions.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product may help if you have trouble digesting lactose or are managing certain digestive or bacterial infections. If you're on antibiotics, talk with your pharmacist first about timing — you may need to separate doses so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria.

It's generally safe, but mention it to your doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, or have a weakened immune system.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Super Probiotic by Windmill Natural Vitamins: Common Questions

Does Super Probiotic by Windmill Natural Vitamins interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Super Probiotic has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Super Probiotic contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my lactose intolerance?
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance — it's the enzyme your body may be missing or not producing enough of to digest dairy. Lactobacillus acidophilus (the probiotic) doesn't directly treat lactose intolerance, though it supports digestive health overall.
Can I take this if I'm on antibiotics?
You can, but timing matters. Antibiotics kill bacteria — including the live L. acidophilus in this supplement — so taking them together reduces how well the probiotic works. Ask your pharmacist to help you space the doses apart, ideally a few hours or more.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
Lactase is rated likely safe in pregnancy. We don't have enough safety data on file for Lactobacillus acidophilus during pregnancy, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist to decide what's right for you.
What side effects might I have?
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated. Lactobacillus acidophilus can occasionally cause mild gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea — these are uncommon. A rare allergic reaction to lactase has been reported, mostly in people handling the powder at work.
Will this help with IBS or antibiotic-associated diarrhea?
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for both IBS and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, which means there's some evidence but it's not definitive yet. Results vary from person to person.
