What’s inside
Partial disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: Lactase and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Lactase is an enzyme that helps break down lactose, the natural sugar in milk and dairy products.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live beneficial bacterium (a probiotic) that supports gut health. The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients—maltodextrin, calcium sulfate, hypromellose, silicon dioxide, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate—which are fillers and binders used to form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance. For other uses—prematurity and colic—the evidence isn't strong enough to rate it.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It's possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and the evidence for acute respiratory distress syndrome hasn't been established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed. A rare allergic reaction has been reported in workers exposed to powdered lactase, though this is uncommon in users taking the supplement orally.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects—like abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea—can occur when combined with other probiotics, but they're uncommon.
In rare cases, L. acidophilus has been linked to serious infections (like blood infections or endocarditis), though these usually happen in people with weakened immune systems or after the bacteria have translocated from another part of the body. Before taking this product regularly, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main concern. If you're taking antibiotics, separate them from this probiotic by a few hours so the medication doesn't kill off the live beneficial bacteria before they work.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist for the right timing.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help if you have lactose intolerance or conditions like IBS or antibiotic-related diarrhea. The main thing to watch is timing—don't take it at the same time as antibiotics.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a weakened immune system, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
