Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • “Krill Oil” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (500 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.
  • “Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (115 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This softgel contains 4 active ingredients: krill oil (a marine source of omega-3s), eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (both omega-3 fatty acids), total omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and astaxanthin (a natural antioxidant from krill). The inactive ingredients are gelatin, glycerin, water, ethyl vanillin, and sorbitol — standard capsule materials and flavorings.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Astaxanthin product and its label doesn't state a use — see Astaxanthin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The product facts we have don't include effectiveness ratings for krill oil itself or its omega-3 content for any condition. Astaxanthin (one of its components) has been studied for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome, but the evidence for each is insufficient to rate.

If you're taking this for a specific reason, it's worth discussing what the research actually shows with your doctor or pharmacist.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red or discolored stool.

A small number of trial participants on higher doses experienced severe stomach pain. The safety data advises against using this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Astaxanthin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 672 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check any medications you're on with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzyme systems — astaxanthin may lower their blood levels. Over 600 medications are affected by these pathways, so it's important to confirm your exact prescriptions are safe to combine with this supplement.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This krill oil supplement contains astaxanthin, which can theoretically slow how your liver processes certain medications. If you take any prescription drugs — especially those metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

It's generally well tolerated otherwise, but skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Superior Omega-3 Krill Oil Extra Strength 500 mg by Schiff MegaRed: Common Questions

Does Superior Omega-3 Krill Oil Extra Strength 500 mg by Schiff MegaRed interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Superior Omega-3 Krill Oil Extra Strength 500 mg has a known interaction with 838 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Superior Omega-3 Krill Oil Extra Strength 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is in this krill oil supplement?
It's a softgel with krill oil and its components — two omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), phospholipids, and astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, glycerin, water, and other inert ingredients.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data aren't there yet — there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in those situations.
What side effects does astaxanthin cause?
Most commonly, people report abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red or discolored stool. A small number on higher doses experienced severe stomach pain. For the doses in this product, side effects are generally mild.
Does this really help with aging skin, memory, or eye health?
Astaxanthin has been studied for those uses, but the evidence isn't strong enough to say whether it works. We don't have effectiveness data for krill oil itself either, so if you're taking it for a specific reason, ask your doctor what the actual research shows.
Why do I need to check my medications before taking this?
Astaxanthin in this product may slow how your liver breaks down certain prescription drugs, potentially lowering their blood levels and making them less effective. That's why it's important to run your exact medications through the interaction checker before you start.
