HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Krill Oil for Kids by Dr. Mercola
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 5 active ingredients: krill oil itself, omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), phospholipids, and organic astaxanthin (a carotenoid antioxidant from algae). The krill oil and its component fatty acids are the core omega-3 source; astaxanthin and choline are added for additional nutritional support.
The capsule also contains organic olive oil and organic rosemary leaf extract as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin isn't established in our data — we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome. Choline is rated possibly ineffective for athletic performance, and we hold insufficient evidence for bronchitis, age-related cognitive decline, liver issues related to intravenous nutrition, and allergic rhinitis.
Neither ingredient has a strong evidence rating for the uses listed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. Common side effects from astaxanthin include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool; at very high doses (40 mg daily), severe stomach pain has been reported.
Choline is well tolerated at normal doses, but high-dose supplements can cause fishy body odor, and doses above 9 grams daily may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal discomfort. For pregnancy, astaxanthin has not enough safety data and should be avoided; choline is likely safe during pregnancy but should be used only at doses your doctor recommends.
While breastfeeding, astaxanthin should be avoided due to limited data, and choline should be used only under professional guidance because your needs are higher during lactation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product if your child takes any medications metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 (astaxanthin may theoretically decrease their effectiveness), or if they use atropine or other anticholinergic drugs (choline may theoretically reduce atropine's effects in the brain). These interactions are theoretical based on lab research and haven't been confirmed in people, but it's worth confirming your specific medications aren't affected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Krill Oil for Kids is a source of omega-3 fatty acids with added astaxanthin and choline, but the evidence for its benefits isn't well established in our data. Before you give it to your child — especially if they take any regular medications — check with your pharmacist or pediatrician about possible interactions with drugs that rely on your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes.
Pregnant or breastfeeding parents should talk with their doctor, as the safety data for astaxanthin are insufficient and choline requires professional dosing guidance.

Krill Oil for Kids by Dr. Mercola Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Krill Oil for Kids by Dr.
Mercola contains astaxanthin and choline, both of which have documented interactions with medications. The most serious concern is astaxanthin's theoretical effect on drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme — astaxanthin may speed up how your body clears these medications, potentially making them less effective.
This effect hasn't been seen in humans yet, but lab research suggests it's possible.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme in a similar way, with the same moderate severity rating and the same caveat: it's lab-based so far, not proven in people.
Choline carries one documented minor interaction: it may theoretically blunt the effects of atropine (an anticholinergic medication used for certain conditions and eye exams) in the brain, though this too comes from animal research and hasn't been confirmed in humans.
We were unable to check three ingredients — eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and phospholipids — because we hold no monographs for them. Altogether, these interactions span 682 individual medications.
Before you start this product, use the medication checker below to see if you're taking anything that relies on CYP3A4 or CYP2B6, or if you use atropine or any anticholinergic medication.

For each ingredient in Krill Oil for Kids with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
organic Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
Choline
Atropine
Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.
