Sweet Wormwood Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Gaia Herbs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Sweet Wormwood against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: an extract of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) aerial parts. The extract also includes organic alcohol and water as inactive ingredients used to deliver the herb.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold shows sweet wormwood is possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever). For other uses listed — nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis — the evidence isn't established in our data, meaning we don't have enough reliable information to rate them either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sweet wormwood is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting.
Rarely, it may cause liver damage — one case reported hepatitis after someone took artemisinin (a compound in sweet wormwood) for 10 days, with symptoms like abdominal pain and dark urine that resolved after stopping. A mild allergic reaction (rash and cough) has also been reported rarely.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because of possible harm to a developing baby, and there isn't enough safety information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check whether you take any drugs that strain the liver, or any medications processed by the CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 liver enzymes — the effect on these pathways is unclear but could change how your drugs work. Use the medication checker on this page with your prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have hay fever and are interested in an herbal option, sweet wormwood may be worth exploring — but only short-term and only if you're not on medications that depend on those liver enzymes or are already stressing your liver. Talk with your pharmacist before you start, especially if you take any prescription drugs or have liver concerns.

Sweet Wormwood by Gaia Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gaia Herbs Sweet Wormwood contains one active ingredient — sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) extract — that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs). Because sweet wormwood itself may harm liver function, taking it alongside medications that do the same could theoretically add to that risk — a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sweet wormwood may also affect how your body processes drugs broken down by two liver enzymes: CYP3A4 and CYP2B6. The research here is mixed — one compound in sweet wormwood (artemisinin) may speed up these enzymes, but the extract as a whole appears to slow them down in the lab.
Either way, this could change how well or how much of these medications work in your body. Both are rated Moderate.
Altogether, these interactions span 870 individual medications. Because the effect of the extract itself isn't fully clear, and because so many drugs depend on these liver pathways, you'll want to run your specific medications through the checker on this page before you start.

organic sweet Wormwood (Artemisia annua) aerial parts extract
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
