Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
TruBiotics contains 2 active ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12, both live probiotics designed to support digestive and gut health. The product also contains inactive ingredients including anhydrous sugar, skim milk powder, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, which serve as binders and stabilizers in the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis based on the evidence we hold. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (allergic or skin conditions).
For acute respiratory distress syndrome, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it. We don't have effectiveness data on file for Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12 in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, since it contains live microorganisms, there's a theoretical risk of infection in certain patients — your healthcare provider should know your full medical history before you start.
Oral side effects are uncommon but can include stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and burping when combined with other probiotics. In rare cases, a rash or itching has been reported, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus was the cause.
We don't have specific pregnancy or breastfeeding data on file for either ingredient, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about use during those times.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, check the timing with your pharmacist before you start TruBiotics — antibiotics can reduce the probiotic's effectiveness if taken at the same time. That's the only medication interaction we have data on for this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
TruBiotics is a two-strain probiotic that may help with digestive issues like IBS and antibiotic-related diarrhea. The main thing to watch: if you're taking antibiotics, time your doses apart so the medication doesn't kill the live bacteria.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have a compromised immune system or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
