What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 3 active ingredients.
  • “A 50:50 Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (15,000,000,000 Live Organism(s)) without saying how much of each component you get.

Ultra Flora Plus DF is a powder with 3 active ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (a live probiotic bacterium), Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 (another live probiotic bacterium), and Globulin Protein Concentrate. The product also contains inactive ingredients including fructooligosaccharides and concentrate of immunoglobulin proteins.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive health and bacterial balance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Colic, Constipation, Helicobacter pylori — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Helicobacter pylori, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Lactose intolerance.

The Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (allergic conditions), and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

We don't have effectiveness data on file for the other two active ingredients.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, since it contains live, active microorganisms, there's a theoretical concern it could cause infection in some patients — cases of bacteremia, sepsis, and other serious infections have been reported, though most are thought to happen when bacteria move from their normal location in the body.

Gastrointestinal side effects like belly discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or nausea are uncommon but possible, especially when combined with other probiotics. A small number of trial participants taking a multi-probiotic blend reported rash or itching, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus was the cause.

Check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are hospitalized.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining this product with antibiotic drugs. Taking them at the same time may lower how well the probiotic works — spacing out the doses is usually recommended.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis. If you're on antibiotics, space out the timing with your doctor's guidance — taking them together may reduce the probiotic's benefit.

Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, particularly if you have any condition affecting your immune system.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Ultra Flora Plus DF by Metagenics: Common Questions

Does Ultra Flora Plus DF by Metagenics interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Ultra Flora Plus DF has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Ultra Flora Plus DF contains 3 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while I'm on antibiotics?
You can, but timing matters. Antibiotics can kill off the live organisms in this probiotic, which would reduce how well it works. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about spacing out your antibiotic and this supplement — they can suggest the best timing for your situation.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe in pregnancy based on available data. That said, safety information is limited, so discuss it with your doctor or midwife before starting — they know your individual health picture and can give you personalized advice.
What does this product actually do?
The main active ingredient, Lactobacillus acidophilus, is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, certain types of bacterial vaginosis, and Helicobacter pylori infection. We don't have reliable evidence data on the other probiotic or the protein concentrate in this formulation.
Are there any side effects?
Most people tolerate it well, but some experience mild stomach symptoms like bloating, gas, discomfort, or diarrhea — these are uncommon. Very rarely, a rash or itching has been reported. Since it contains live microorganisms, there's a small theoretical risk of infection if your immune system is compromised.
Does it work for allergies?
No — Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly ineffective for allergic conditions (atopic disease). It's not recommended for that use based on current evidence.
