HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ultra Flora Plus DF by Metagenics
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Ultra Flora Plus DF is a powder with 3 active ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (a live probiotic bacterium), Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 (another live probiotic bacterium), and Globulin Protein Concentrate. The product also contains inactive ingredients including fructooligosaccharides and concentrate of immunoglobulin proteins.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (allergic conditions), and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
We don't have effectiveness data on file for the other two active ingredients.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, since it contains live, active microorganisms, there's a theoretical concern it could cause infection in some patients — cases of bacteremia, sepsis, and other serious infections have been reported, though most are thought to happen when bacteria move from their normal location in the body.
Gastrointestinal side effects like belly discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or nausea are uncommon but possible, especially when combined with other probiotics. A small number of trial participants taking a multi-probiotic blend reported rash or itching, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus was the cause.
Check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are hospitalized.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining this product with antibiotic drugs. Taking them at the same time may lower how well the probiotic works — spacing out the doses is usually recommended.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis. If you're on antibiotics, space out the timing with your doctor's guidance — taking them together may reduce the probiotic's benefit.
Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, particularly if you have any condition affecting your immune system.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
