Vitamin B12 is generally very well tolerated by mouth. Your body excretes any excess in your urine, so there's no established upper limit — you can't really overdose on it.

Serious side effects are rare; the main concern is a very uncommon allergic reaction (rash, itching, or hives), which might occur if you have a cobalt sensitivity. In extremely rare cases tied to correcting severe anemia, B12 has been linked to a dangerous drop in potassium (low blood potassium), but this is not a typical concern with routine supplementation.

B12 is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended amounts — in fact, it's needed during both — so follow your provider's guidance.
