Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted yin chen extract. Yin chen is a traditional herbal remedy — the aerial parts of Artemisia annua — used in herbal medicine for liver and biliary support and to address certain digestive concerns.

The liquid form also contains vegetable palm glycerin and alcohol as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Yin Chen product and its label doesn't state a use — see Yin Chen's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for yin chen isn't established in the data we hold. Our records note insufficient reliable evidence to rate its use for asthma, biliary disorders, liver disease, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and metabolic syndrome — the conditions most commonly associated with it in traditional practice.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means human trial data either haven't been published or aren't robust enough to draw firm conclusions yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Yin chen is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though human safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal bloating, dizziness, and nausea.

Rarely, more serious effects have been reported — including heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), fainting, numbness, and tremors, particularly at higher doses (15–30 grams). There's a particular case of two people who developed a serious arrhythmia condition (Adams-Stokes syndrome) after taking yin chen with another herb for hepatitis, though it's unclear which ingredient or combination was responsible.

Yin chen should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — safety data are insufficient, and Artemisia plants are traditionally contraindicated in these situations.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Yin Chen.

Before taking Yin Chen, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take pentobarbital (Nembutal) or any CNS depressants — including sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or opioid painkillers. Yin chen can enhance their sedative effects and increase your risk of excessive drowsiness, confusion, or loss of balance.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Yin Chen is used in traditional herbal medicine, but human evidence for its effectiveness hasn't been firmly established yet. It's not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Most importantly, it can amplify the effects of sedative and CNS-depressant medications, so check with your doctor or pharmacist about any prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs you're taking before you start — especially sleep aids, anxiety medications, painkillers, or seizure medications.

Yin Chen by Hawaii Pharm: Common Questions

Does Yin Chen by Hawaii Pharm interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Yin Chen has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Yin Chen contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Yin Chen if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — avoid it in both situations. There isn't enough safety data, and Artemisia plants (the family yin chen belongs to) are traditionally advised against during pregnancy and lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about safe options for your situation.
What are the most common side effects?
The most common ones reported are abdominal bloating, dizziness, and nausea. Most people tolerate it well, but these are worth watching for, especially when you first start.
Does yin chen actually work for liver problems?
Traditional medicine has used it for liver and biliary support, but we don't have reliable human trial evidence yet to say whether it's effective. The data we hold show insufficient evidence to rate it for liver disease or biliary disorders.
Why does it have alcohol in it?
The liquid form contains alcohol as part of the extract preparation, along with vegetable palm glycerin. If you're avoiding alcohol, you may want to ask your pharmacist about alternative forms.
Is it safe to take with my sleep medication?
No — yin chen itself has sedative effects and can amplify the action of sleep medications and other CNS depressants, raising the risk of excessive drowsiness or dizziness. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
