Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: a wildcrafted Yin Chen extract. Yin Chen is a traditional Chinese herb (also called artemisia scoparia) used in herbal medicine for various purposes.

The liquid also includes vegetable palm glycerin and alcohol as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Yin Chen's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Liver and gallbladder support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biliary disorders, Liver disease, Hepatic function, Cholestasis.
  • The closest evidence on file: Yin Chen is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Biliary disorders (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Yin Chen is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Liver disease.

The evidence for yin chen isn't established in our data. We have no reliable evidence to rate its use for asthma, biliary disorders, liver disease, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), or metabolic syndrome.

If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether there's solid data to support that use.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Yin Chen is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though human safety data are limited. The most common side effects are mild: abdominal bloating, dizziness, and nausea.

Rare but serious side effects have been reported, including heart rhythm abnormalities (arrhythmias), fainting, numbness, and tremors—particularly at higher doses (15–30 grams). One case described two women who developed a severe arrhythmia called Adams-Stokes syndrome while taking yin chen with another herb; it's unclear which ingredient was responsible.

During pregnancy, safety data advises against use because artemisia plants carry insufficient safety information. The same applies to breastfeeding—there isn't enough data to know if it's safe, so it should be avoided.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Yin Chen.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 248 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Yin Chen, check whether you use any CNS depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or certain pain relievers—or pentobarbital specifically. These interactions are rated Moderate, and combining them with this product could deepen drowsiness and impair coordination.

Yin Chen by Hawaii Pharm: Common Questions

Does Yin Chen by Hawaii Pharm interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Yin Chen has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Yin Chen contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Yin Chen if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because artemisia plants haven't been studied enough in pregnant people. Similarly, there isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for you.
What are the most common side effects?
Abdominal bloating, dizziness, and nausea are the most common. Most people tolerate it well, but these mild effects can happen.
Are there serious side effects I should know about?
Serious side effects are rare but have been reported, especially at higher doses (15–30 grams). These include heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), fainting, numbness, and tremors. If you experience any of these, stop and contact your doctor right away.
Does Yin Chen actually work for liver disease or asthma?
We don't have reliable evidence to say whether it works for those conditions. The data just isn't established in our records. Your pharmacist or doctor can help you figure out whether there's support for using it for what you have in mind.
Will this make me drowsy?
Yin Chen itself can cause dizziness and has sedative effects. If you take other medications that make you drowsy—like sleep aids or sedatives—combining them could amplify that effect and impair your balance and coordination.
