Zea-Tein 20/20 contains two active ingredients: zeaxanthin and lutein, both carotenoids found naturally in the retina and other tissues. The product also includes marigold flower extract, a traditional source of these compounds.
The capsule itself uses hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a standard inactive ingredient that holds everything together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. There isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it helps with cognitive decline or Alzheimer's disease.
Lutein is also possibly effective for AMD and for cataracts. For other conditions the product is sometimes marketed for — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence suggests lutein is likely not effective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both zeaxanthin and lutein are generally well tolerated at the doses typically found in supplements. Lutein at doses up to 20 mg daily has not caused adverse effects in trials.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data on concentrated supplements is limited. Both ingredients are rated Likely Safe, but their use during pregnancy and lactation should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist because supplement safety in these periods hasn't been thoroughly studied — food sources are fine, but supplements are a different story.

Lutein and zeaxanthin help shield the eye’s retina from damage by supporting healthy macular pigment density. Source Naturals Zea-Tein 20/20 provides lutein and zeaxanthin, sourced from the marigold flower. These important carotenoid pigments aggregate in the retina and provide protection from the damaging effects of free radicals and ultraviolet light. Clinical studies suggest that this lutein-zeaxanthin dosage can support healthy macular pigment density, visual processing speed, and reaction time. Preliminary evidence also indicates that lutein supplementation may help support healthy cognitive performance.
