What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Zhi Zi against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Zhi Zi by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Zhi Zi contains one active ingredient: certified organic Gardenia jasminoides (gardenia) dried fruit liquid extract. The liquid itself is made with menstruum, which is a solvent used to extract the active compounds from the fruit and preserve them in liquid form.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for gardenia's effectiveness isn't established in the data we hold. Our records show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for anxiety, dementia, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, or influenza.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the research isn't there yet to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Safety data on gardenia are limited, especially for large amounts or long-term use. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against it.
The same goes for breastfeeding — talk with your OB or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and considering this product. When applied to the skin, gardenia can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in people who are sensitive to it.
There's also a case report of blue-gray skin pigmentation in someone who took a multi-ingredient product containing gardenia extract for seven years, though the pigmentation gradually faded after she stopped. Most adverse effect data come from topical use or single case reports, so the full safety picture in oral use remains unclear.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Zhi Zi, check your medications against stimulant laxatives — drugs that work by triggering intestinal contractions to move your bowels. Gardenia may strengthen both the effect and the side effects of these medications, including diarrhea.

Zhi Zi by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Zhi Zi by Herbal Terra is a single-ingredient liquid extract of gardenia fruit.
It does interact with one category of medications: stimulant laxatives (drugs that prompt bowel movements by stimulating the intestines). Gardenia may intensify both the effect and the unwanted side effects of these laxatives.
The fruit contains a compound called geniposide that acts as a laxative itself, so combining it with a laxative medication could amplify the result — and the diarrhea that may come with it.
