Clinical
Dextromethorphan is used to temporarily relieve cough caused by the common cold, the flu, or other conditions. Dextromethorphan will relieve a cough but will not treat the cause of the cough or speed recovery. Dextromethorphan is in a class of medications called antitussives. It works by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing.
Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗This is an over-the-counter liquid-filled capsule taken by mouth, marketed under FDA's OTC monograph rules for daytime cold and flu symptom relief. It contains acetaminophen, which is typically used to reduce fever and relieve pain, along with dextromethorphan, which functions as a cough suppressant. Guaifenesin works as an expectorant, intended to help thin mucus, while phenylephrine serves as a nasal decongestant to help relieve stuffiness.
