Clinical
Stool softeners are used on a short-term basis to relieve constipation by people who should avoid straining during bowel movements because of heart conditions, hemorrhoids, and other problems. They work by softening stools to make them easier to pass.
Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗This is an over-the-counter oral capsule containing docusate sodium, a stool softener. Docusate sodium is typically used to make bowel movements easier by softening stool and reducing straining. It functions as an emollient laxative, meaning it works by helping the intestines retain water in stool rather than stimulating bowel contractions. This product is marketed under the FDA's over-the-counter monograph rules for laxatives.
