Interaction Summary
Serum potassium increases of greater than 5.5 mEq/L were reported in 0.9% of patients receiving aliskiren alone compared with 0.6% of patients receiving placebo. However, the incidence of hyperkalemia was higher (5.5%) when aliskiren was administered to patients with diabetes on concomitant ACE inhibitor therapy. Use caution when aliskiren is given concomitantly with potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, or other drugs that increase potassium levels. Monitoring of electrolytes and renal function is recommended.

How To Manage Interaction

Potassium is essential for the proper functioning of the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, and digestive system. Usually the food you eat supplies all of the potassium you need. However, certain diseases (e.g., kidney disease and gastrointestinal disease with vomiting and diarrhea) and drugs, especially diuretics ('water pills'), remove potassium from the body. Potassium supplements are taken to replace potassium losses and prevent potassium deficiency.

Aliskiren Overview

Aliskiren is used alone or in combination with some medications to treat high blood pressure. Aliskiren is in a class of medications called direct renin inhibitors. It works by decreasing certain natural chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood vessels relax and the heart can pump blood more efficiently.
