DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Spironolactone
Spironolactone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Abuta interacts with.
Animal research shows that taking abuta causes diuretic effects, including potassium excretion.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something a little tricky about pairing Abuta with spironolactone. The concern on file comes from animal studies (not human ones), where Abuta acted like a water pill and helped the body flush out potassium. Spironolactone works differently. It's a 'potassium-sparing' diuretic, meaning it actually holds onto potassium while getting rid of extra fluid.
So in theory these two could pull in opposite directions on your potassium, plus stack up their fluid-losing effects, which might leave you dizzy, lightheaded, dehydrated, or with off-balance potassium levels. Honestly, the evidence here is weak and theoretical, so don't panic. But since spironolactone already affects potassium, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Spironolactone page
“Potassium is the supplement I check first for anyone on spironolactone (Aldactone, Carospir), because this water pill works by holding potassium in the body, and supplementing more on top of that can push blood levels too high. It is one of 206 supplement and herbal ingredients with documented interactions here, and the list warrants g…”

About Abuta
What is Abuta?
- Menstrual cramps and women's health
- Kidney and urinary tract complaints
- Digestive upset
- Fever
- Traditional support during pregnancy and childbirth
Abuta (Cissampelos pareira) is a tropical climbing plant used in traditional medicine, especially for menstrual and urinary complaints. Good-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits and safety are not well established. Because of uncertain safety—and its traditional use to affect the uterus—it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and discussed with a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Spironolactone
What Is Spironolactone Used For?
Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir
Spironolactone tablets and spironolactone oral suspension are used to treat several conditions. Both forms treat NYHA Class III–IV heart failure with reduced ejection fraction — helping patients survive longer, reducing fluid buildup, and lowering the need for hospitalization. Both are also used as add-on therapy for high blood pressure when other medicines aren't enough, and to manage fluid buildup (edema) in adults with liver cirrhosis.
Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are additionally approved to manage edema in nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder causing protein loss and swelling) and to treat primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands overproduce the hormone aldosterone — both before surgery and as long-term therapy for patients who can't or won't have surgery. The oral suspension is not approved for nephrotic syndrome or primary hyperaldosteronism.
