DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Chlorthalidone
Chlorthalidone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Abuta interacts with.
Animal research shows that taking abuta causes diuretic effects, including potassium excretion.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: chlorthalidone is a water pill that already pushes your kidneys to flush out salt, fluid, and potassium. The concern with abuta is that animal studies suggest it may have its own mild water-pill-like action, including some potassium loss. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, get a little too much of the same effect.
What that might look like in real life is feeling dizzy or lightheaded (especially standing up), getting dehydrated, or running low on potassium, which can cause muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. I want to be honest though: this is based only on lab and animal data, not human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since chlorthalidone already affects your fluids and minerals, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding abuta.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorthalidone page
“Chlorthalidone (Hygroton, Thalitone) lowers blood pressure by helping the kidneys shed salt and water, and that mechanism makes its supplement interactions worth genuine care. Most of the 222 ingredients on file either add to its blood-pressure-lowering effect or act as diuretics themselves, so pressure or potassium can fall further th…”

About Abuta
What is Abuta?
- Menstrual cramps and women's health
- Kidney and urinary tract complaints
- Digestive upset
- Fever
- Traditional support during pregnancy and childbirth
Abuta (Cissampelos pareira) is a tropical climbing plant used in traditional medicine, especially for menstrual and urinary complaints. Good-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits and safety are not well established. Because of uncertain safety—and its traditional use to affect the uterus—it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and discussed with a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Chlorthalidone
What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?
Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone
Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.
Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
