Allspice and Aspirin, Carisoprodol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Carisoprodol

Aspirin, Carisoprodol falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Allspice interacts with.

Theoretically, combining allspice with an antiplatelet or anticoagulant drug might increase the risk of bleeding.
Eugenol, a constituent of allspice, is reported to have antiplatelet activity. However, this interaction has yet not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Soma Compound is a combination of aspirin (a blood thinner that keeps platelets from sticking together) and carisoprodol (a muscle relaxer). The piece that matters here is the aspirin part. Allspice contains eugenol, the same compound found in cloves, and in lab studies eugenol can also make platelets a little less sticky. Stack that on top of aspirin, and in theory you could nudge your bleeding risk up a bit, meaning easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, and it has never actually been reported in people. Normal cooking amounts of allspice are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts or allspice essential oil are where I'd be more cautious. If you use those regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Carisoprodol page

“This is one of the longer interaction lists on the site, and for Soma Compound (aspirin plus the muscle relaxant carisoprodol) the caution is earned. Of the 266 supplements and herbs on file, just over 200 push in the same direction as aspirin itself, thinning the blood and raising the odds of bleeding.”

About Allspice

What is Allspice?

Allspice
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Muscle and joint pain (topical)
  • Toothache and oral discomfort
  • Antimicrobial uses
  • Flavoring in food and drinks

Allspice is a popular cooking spice from a Caribbean evergreen tree that has long been used in folk medicine for digestion, pain, and infections. There is very little high-quality human research to support these medicinal uses, so it is best thought of as a flavorful food rather than a proven treatment. Amounts used in cooking are generally considered safe, but concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully.
