Aloe and Fish Oil Triglycerides

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Fish Oil Triglycerides

Fish Oil Triglycerides falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Aloe interacts with.

Theoretically, aloe gel might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that aloe gel can inhibit platelet aggregation. This inhibition was greater than that seen with celecoxib, but less than that seen with aspirin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with fish oil triglycerides (like Omegaven): high doses of omega-3s can mildly thin the blood by making platelets a little less sticky. Aloe, when taken by mouth, has shown a similar platelet-slowing effect in lab dishes, so stacking the two could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk up a bit. Think easier bruising, nosebleeds, or cuts that take longer to stop.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, not real patients, so it's more of a 'keep an eye out' than a red alert. Aloe gel on your skin isn't the concern, oral aloe is. If you take both regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fish Oil Triglycerides page

“Nearly everything on this page points at one danger for anyone receiving Fish Oil Triglycerides (Omegaven): bleeding. Omega-3 fats can slow clotting somewhat on their own, and 202 of the interacting supplements and herbs add their own blood-thinning or antiplatelet effects on top of that, so combining them casually is a real mistake.”

  • Wound healing
  • Constipation

Aloe vera gel is widely used on the skin for minor burns and irritation, and some research suggests it may help. Aloe latex (the yellow part) is a strong laxative that can cause cramping and is not considered safe for regular use. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking aloe by mouth, and avoid oral aloe during pregnancy.
