Aloe and Ropinirole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Ropinirole

Ropinirole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Aloe interacts with.

Theoretically, aloe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that aloe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear ropinirole. The concern here is that aloe taken by mouth might gently speed that enzyme up, which could move ropinirole out of your system a little faster. If that happened, you might notice your medicine not working quite as well, meaning more tremor, stiffness, or returning restless legs symptoms at night.

Now for the reassuring part: this is very theoretical. It comes only from lab and test-tube studies, not real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Aloe gel on your skin won't do this. If you take aloe by mouth regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how well your ropinirole is controlling your symptoms.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ropinirole page

“Activated charcoal deserves the closest look on this page. It is the only one of the 101 entries rated major against ropinirole (Requip, Adartrel), because charcoal can bind the drug in the gut and shrink the amount that actually reaches you, and for someone relying on ropinirole for Parkinson's disease or restless legs, that can mean…”

Aloe vera gel is widely used on the skin for minor burns and irritation, and some research suggests it may help. Aloe latex (the yellow part) is a strong laxative that can cause cramping and is not considered safe for regular use. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking aloe by mouth, and avoid oral aloe during pregnancy.

About Ropinirole

What Is Ropinirole Used For?

Brand names: Requip, Adartrel

Ropinirole tablets are used to treat two conditions: Parkinson's disease and moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) — the uncomfortable urge to move the legs, especially at night or at rest.

Ropinirole extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for Parkinson's disease only. If you take the extended-release form, it is not approved for RLS — that use applies to the regular (immediate-release) tablets.
