Your birth control pill, Ovulen, contains two hormones (ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol) that your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, American elder appears to slow that same enzyme down a little. In theory, that could let estrogen and progestin levels drift a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of the typical hormone side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or spotting.

Here is the honest part: this is only laboratory data, not real human studies, so it is far from proven. Cooked, food-style elderberry is unlikely to be a problem, while concentrated supplements are more of a question mark. If you take elderberry regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.
