Here's the gist for verapamil. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. In test-tube studies, American elder appears to slow that enzyme. If that happened in real life, less verapamil would be cleared, so more could build up in your bloodstream.

Higher verapamil levels could mean more of its usual effects: blood pressure dropping too low, a slower heartbeat, dizziness, tiredness, or swollen ankles. That said, this caution comes only from lab research, not from people, so it's theoretical at this point, and everyday cooked elderberry in food is unlikely to be an issue. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before adding an elderberry product, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

About Verapamil

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
