Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down almotriptan. Lab studies hint that American elder may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, almotriptan could linger longer in your system and feel a little stronger. With a triptan, that might mean more of its usual effects, like tingling, flushing, a tight or heavy feeling in the chest or throat, dizziness, or drowsiness.

The big caveat is that this is only test-tube research, not real people, so we honestly don't know if it matters at the doses you'd actually take. A short course of properly prepared elderberry for a cold is unlikely to be a big deal, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
