Here's the gist with Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir): your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear these antiviral medicines. Early lab testing suggests American elder might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, more of the drug could linger in your system, which in theory might mean a higher chance of side effects like tiredness, headache, nausea, or changes in your liver blood tests.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube studies, not from people, so we really don't know if normal elderberry use moves the needle at all. Food amounts and short cold-and-flu use are unlikely to be a big concern, but since you're treating hepatitis C, it's worth a quick check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding an elderberry supplement.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Elbasvir and Grazoprevir Used For?

Brand name: Zepatier

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults and children 12 years of age and older (or weighing at least 30 kg). It works against both the most common strain of HCV (genotype 1) and genotype 4.

Depending on the specific genotype, prior treatment history, and certain viral characteristics, Zepatier may be prescribed alone or combined with another antiviral medicine called ribavirin. Your prescriber will determine the right regimen and duration for your situation.
